McKinley Explorer
6 days / 5 nights

Between Anchorage and Fairbanks stands majestic Mt. McKinley. Still called Denali - the Great One - by Alaska natives and locals, Mt. McKinley is not only the tallest mountain in North America, it's also the most spectacular. The mountain is also the center point of a six-million-acre wilderness that boasts some of the most unspoiled, untamed country in the world. This 6 day/5 night itinerary includes a memorable train journey, the famous Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park, and your choice of optional adventures.
Itinerary
Detailed day by day information
Day 1: Anchorage
Upon arrival in beautiful Anchorage, we'll transport you to your hotel. Plan your first evening exploring the largest city in Alaska or just relaxing. A modern city surrounded by spectacular wilderness with adventures just steps from the hotel, Anchorage has plenty to offer. Home to Alaska's largest selection of quality Alaska Native art and souvenirs such as finely crafted ivory, Native masks, and carved jade, you’ll find abundant opportunities to shop; and with access to some of the freshest seafood in the world, you can enjoy plump, cold-water Kachemak Bay oysters, Alaska king crab, fresh-caught halibut, or wild Alaska salmon – the staple of Alaska seafood, for your evening meal. Anchorage has it all! And no sales tax! Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 2: Anchorage - Denali
Journey between the mountains of the spectacular Chugach and Alaska Mountain ranges aboard the luxurious glass-domed railcars of the McKinley Explorer. You will glide past Mt. McKinley to Denali National Park. With six million acres, Denali National Park & Preserve is larger than Massachusetts. Located in the heart of Alaska’s magnificent and rugged interior, the park is home to majestic Mt. McKinley, North America’s highest mountain. The Park also features glaciers, a sub-arctic ecosystem and an internationally designated biosphere preserve with moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears and wolves. Overnight in Denali.

Day 3: Denali National Park
Venture into Denali National Park on the Natural History Tour in search of moose, caribou, bear and Dall sheep, and perhaps catch sight of Mt. McKinley's snowcapped majesty. Participate in complimentary park activities or optional excursions. Overnight in Denali.

Day 4: Denali – Fairbanks
Take time this morning to indulge yourself in more of Denali's wild charm before boarding the McKinley Explorer to travel deeper into Alaska's interior on your journey to Fairbanks, the largest city in the Alaskan Interior. Fairbanks is called "The Golden Heart of Alaska," a reference to the character of her people as much as to the location in Alaska's interior, or to the discovery of gold in 1902. Transfer to your Fairbanks hotel upon arrival and spend some time exploring this frontier city. Overnight in Fairbanks.

Day 5: Fairbanks
Relive the gold rush at its height in Fairbanks. Visit the fully restored Gold Dredge No. 8 to learn how it worked, pan for gold, then enjoy a hearty miner's lunch. The afternoon is free for optional activities. Overnight in Fairbanks. (L)
