Alaska’s pristine beauty is limitless during the summer months, but for many Alaska residents, the real magic of Alaska can only be found during the winter. Join us as we celebrate Alaska’s favorite winter pastime—dog sledding! You will have the opportunity to attend the Iditarod Gala, known as the Musher’s Ball, and also cheer on over 60 racers and more than 1,000 sled dogs as their 1150-mile adventure to Nome begins.
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
The Iditarod was inspired by a monumental and historic event, a dogsled relay of life-saving serum from Anchorage to Nome in 1925. That January, in the middle of a frigid winter, deadly diphtheria broke out in Nome, located along the Bering Sea. Between the stricken town and the nearest serum in Anchorage lay nearly 1,000 miles of Alaska wilderness. The Alaska Railroad ferried the medicine 250 miles north to Nenana. From there, 20 volunteer dogsled drivers relayed the serum the remaining 674 miles. Through the efforts of those heroic mushers, the serum arrived in Nome five days and seven hours after leaving Nenana. The residents of the town were saved. Today, Iditarod mushers brave much of the same wild Alaskan trail as those early heroes. Lives of Nome residents no longer hang in the balance, but the competition remains just as challenging.
