Modoc Rail Adventure 2008
4 days / 3 nights
Rare and remote milage is indeed the best way we can describe this 4 day excursion over part of the former Southern Pacific Modoc Subdivision in Southern Oregon and Northern California plus the Lakeview Branch. The Modoc line between Klamath Falls and Alturas and several miles towards Wendel to the end of track at McArthur is now owned and operated by the Modoc Northern Railroad. This is a total of 107 miles. Then the former SP Lakeview Branch runs north out of Alturas for an additional 56 miles to Lakeview, Oregon running through the remote Pitt River Canyon and along the shores of Goose Lake. McArthur is still owned by the Union Pacific but operated by the Modoc Northern Railroad. Final sale of the line to Modoc Northern will take a couple of years. Our plan is to run our train all the way to Lakeview and we do have full support from the Modoc Northern. If all goes as planned we will cover a total of 326 miles in 4 days.
The Modoc Northern has taken over the operations of the Lake Country Railroad and is putting a lot of work and money into upgrading the line in the scenic and remote Pitt River Canyon. See below for photos of a Modoc Northern work train dumping rock in the canyon. Our charter train will run between Alturas and Lakeview making many photo run-bys over remote and rare milage. We will even be able to use the one Lake County diesel for power.
Tour Includes: Three nights lodging - Photo run-bys each day - Box lunch & drink each day - Modoc Northern Workshop visit - Transfers between trains & lodging - 4 day rail ticket covering 326 rare miles
