Modoc Rail Adventure 2008
4 days / 3 nights

Rare and remote milage is indeed the best way we can describe this 4 day excursion over part of the former Southern Pacific Modoc Subdivision in Southern Oregon and Northern California plus the Lakeview Branch. The Modoc line between Klamath Falls and Alturas and several miles towards Wendel to the end of track at McArthur is now owned and operated by the Modoc Northern Railroad. This is a total of 107 miles. Then the former SP Lakeview Branch runs north out of Alturas for an additional 56 miles to Lakeview, Oregon running through the remote Pitt River Canyon and along the shores of Goose Lake. McArthur is still owned by the Union Pacific but operated by the Modoc Northern Railroad. Final sale of the line to Modoc Northern will take a couple of years. Our plan is to run our train all the way to Lakeview and we do have full support from the Modoc Northern. If all goes as planned we will cover a total of 326 miles in 4 days.

The Modoc Northern has taken over the operations of the Lake Country Railroad and is putting a lot of work and money into upgrading the line in the scenic and remote Pitt River Canyon. See below for photos of a Modoc Northern work train dumping rock in the canyon. Our charter train will run between Alturas and Lakeview making many photo run-bys over remote and rare milage. We will even be able to use the one Lake County diesel for power.

Tour Includes: Three nights lodging - Photo run-bys each day - Box lunch & drink each day - Modoc Northern Workshop visit - Transfers between trains & lodging - 4 day rail ticket covering 326 rare miles

Itinerary
Detailed day by day information
Friday October 10: (L)
Our private charter train will depart from the Klamath Falls, Oregojn Amtrak station at 10:00am and run south to Alturas, California making several photo stops and run-bys. Amtrak's northbound Coast Starlight is due in Klamath Falls at 8:25am. If the Coast Starlight is running late we will not be able to hold our departure from the station any later than 10:30am. If you miss this connection you will have to catch a taxi and head south towards the California state line in order to catch up to us. The highway runs right along the railroad at this point. We tie up for the night in Alturas. Lodging provided in local motels.

Saturday October 11: (L)
We reboard our charter train at Alturas and run to the end of track at McArthur to as close to the bumper post as possible and stage a photo stop at this location. From McArthur on south into Nevada the rails have been removed by the Union Pacific. We will have a Modoc Northern engine follow us down to McArthur and pull us back to Alturas. We then head north towards Lakeview, Oregn on the Lake County Railroad, now operated by the Modoc Northern. We will tie up in Lakeview. Lodging provided in local motels.

Sunday October 12: (L)
We reboard our charter train at Lakeview, Oregon and return to Alturas, California where we will tie up. Lodging provided in local motels.

Monday October 13: (L)
We again board our charter train and head north for Oregon and Klamath Falls. We are planning on arriving back in Klamath Falls by 4:00pm.
