The Overland Trail is the former Southern Pacific 2981, a club-lounge car, built in 1949 by the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company. The Amber Trail is the former Union Pacific 5430, a 44 transcontinental chair car, built in 1950 by Pullman as well.
Silver Lariat is so well-known for dependable operation, fine food, and quality accommodations that it is frequently chartered by major railroads for their own business trains. Silver Lariat was built by the Budd Company in 1948 for the famous California Zephyr train which operated between Chicago and San Francisco. After Amtrak service from 1971-1985, the present owners completely overhauled Silver Lariat mechanically, and renovated the interior.
Pullman-built in 1950 for Denver & Rio Grande Western. Later Pennsylvania Railroad 1148, Penn Central 4448, and Amtrak 3361. Owned by California Rail Tours since 1985. Spacious serpentine lounge, six-seat lunch counter, bar for beverage service, and kitchen for full meal service, diesel generator, stereo. Capacity 25.
Built by Pullman in 1950 as Pleasure Dome-Turquoise Dining Room (a favorite of film stars and other notables)-bar lounge 503 for the Santa Fe's premier "Super Chief" streamliner. Acquired by Amtrak in 1971 and renumbered to 9353. California Rail Tours, who added the car's originally intended Plaza Santa Fe name, has owned this dome car since 1986. Dome, nine-seat private dining room, bar-lounge under the dome, full beverage and limited meal service. Diesel generator, stereo. Capacity 40.
