The Danube-Express: Classes of Service

About the Classes of Service
The Danube Express normally comprises eight cars headed by a modern electric locomotive. However on occasions this is replaced by vintage steam or diesel locomotives from the Hungarian National Collection. The cars, all of which are new or refurbished, provide a high level of comfort and convenience, consist of three deluxe sleeping cars, two classic sleeping cars, restaurant car, lounge car and a car for the staff.

The deluxe sleeping cars offer the last word in guest comfort, featuring compartments with lower berths and private shower and WC. The Danube Express is one of the few trains combining luxury with en-suite facilities. Our classic sleeping cars have shower and toilet facilities within the carriage. Most of these cars are fully air-conditioned, with the exception of the Presidential Cars which are genuine historic vehicles.
The Presidential Car
The historic Presidential Cars date from the 1950s and were once part of the government fleet. Offering a small lounge area these cars are ideal for small private groups and can be added to the train formation.

Whilst retaining many of their original features including wooden panels and elegant furniture, these vehicles have been refurbished to enable them to travel as part of a modern train. Four two-berth compartments with washbasin comprise comfortable seating by day, converting to upper and lower berths at night. Toilet facilities and shower are available in each car at the end of the corridor.

The Presidential suite has a private shower and WC and can accommodate two people. The comfortable sofa converts into a small double bed for night time use.
Classic Sleeping Cars
These cars can accommodate up to 18 persons although, as some of the compartments are used for single occupancy, there is usually a maximum of around 12.

Nine two-berth compartments comprise comfortable seating by day with large windows enabling you to take advantage of the passing scenery. There is a washbasin, mirror and hanging space for clothes. Full bedding is provided and during dinner your attendant will re-arrange the compartment with upper and lower berths ready for night time use. In the morning your attendant will wake you with that welcome cup of tea or coffee.

Toilet facilities and shower are available in each car at the end of the corridor. Towels and some toiletries are provided.
Deluxe Sleeping Cars
These new air-conditioned sleeping cars represent the best in European rail accommodation today, each car providing en-suite accommodation for 10 people in five spacious compartments with two lower beds.

Careful design and attention to detail has ensured 21st Century comfort and convenience with tasteful dcor and fixtures that evoke a bygone era when elegance and style were bywords in travel.

Each compartment comprises sofas, armchair, table, and wardrobe with a safe. The en-suite bathroom, with WC and washbasin, features a power shower, hair dryer and heated towel rail to help you make the most of your stay on board.

In the evening your attendant will convert the sofas into two comfortable lower berth beds and can wake you with a cup of tea or coffee in the morning.
Restaurant Cars
One of the most enjoyable aspects of rail travel is the experience, ever rarer in today’s world, of fine dining on a train in good company. We spare no expense to ensure that all meals are served in a single sitting so you can relax, unrushed, to enjoy the sense of occasion.

Breakfast is a “come as you please” meal with juice, rolls, tea, coffee, cereal or a cooked to order variation. Lunch and dinner are table d’hte served with wine and tea or coffee. Water and soft drinks are also provided.

All meals are freshly prepared in the kitchen by the experienced chefs. Although the meals have a “Central European” theme, the menus are chosen to appeal to all tastes and dietary requirements can be accommodated.
The Lounge Cars
The lounge car is the focal point of the train. You will always find a member of staff to assist you or serve you with that welcome drink.

During the journey there’s nothing better than relaxing here, watching the scenery pass by and chatting to fellow travellers.

The lounge car comes alive before dinner when most passengers meet up for their pre-dinner drinks. After dinner the party continues into the small hours with the train’s resident pianist playing your favourite songs.

Beer, wine and soft drinks are complimentary, however passengers will be required to pay for any spirits consumed.
