Itinerary

Day 1: Chama
Check in to Chama after 3:00PM. Chama is New Mexico’s Hidden treasure with outstanding beauty all around and many outdoor activities. The evening is yours to explore great places like Heron Lake, maybe take in some fishing.

Day 2: Chama to Osier to Chama
Board the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. The longest and highest narrow gauge track around. You will be nearing 10,000 feet in Osier, where you will have a one hour lunch stop in Osier. Wildlife abounds on this exploration back in time and is not uncommon to hear the whistle blowing to move animals away from the tracks. Lacking nothing this rail trip is one of the 20 best rail experiences in the world- The Society of International Railway travelers.

Day 3: Chama to Alamosa
Checkout of your Chama Hotel. You have an entire day to enjoy the lakes in Chama. You can take this opportunity and stop in Antonito that has a multitude of small art shops and murals around town. You can check into your Alamosa hotel anytime after 4:00PM. Alamosa is the San Luis Valleys cultural center, with many shops, activities and spectacular backdrop of rugged alpine peaks.

Day 4: Alamosa to La Veta to Alamosa
Take the Rio Grande Scenic railroad over La Veta pass, the highest point which any active standard gauge rail line crosses the Rockies in Colorado. You will stop for 2 hours to sink in the beauty of La Veta and its artistic inspirations. Returning to Alamosa for another night, you get back in time for dinner.

Day 5: Alamosa to Durango (Drive)
Check out of your Alamosa Hotel. You will be driving to Durango, Co this day. On your sightseeing adventure we recommend stopping for a while in Pagosa Springs to take in a natural wonder of Colorado high country. The volcanic hot springs are here for enjoyment for all. This natural resource is not only refreshing, but mesmerizing. Additionally, just an hour away from Durango is the awe inspiring Mesa Verde cliff dwellings. Check into your Durango hotel after 3:00PM. Many world class dining experiences await you in Durango. Home to Galleries and shops galore, you can find something for everyone in this bustling small town.

Day 6: Durango to Silverton to Durango
Arrive at the Depot one hour before your set departure time. You will be traversing the Animas river gorge on your way to Silverton, Co. Silverton is a historic old mining town where you can day dream about the years gone by, as if you had stepped right into the 1800’s. you will have 2 hours to enjoy the feeling of a town built on the dreams of men and the rail industry of yesteryear. Returning by train to Durango on the afternoon on departure from Silverton.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
2008 is here: Built 127 years ago and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a 64-mile, fully operational steam railroad jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. The railroad operates passenger trains seven days a week from Saturday, May 24 to Sunday, October 19.
