Glacier Cruise and Interior Alaska
6 days / 5 nights
Cruise striking Prince William Sound and see Alaska's highest concentration of tidewater glaciers, then travel north into Alaska's vast and rugged interior region on the Denali Star train.
Itinerary Detailed day by day information
Day 1: Anchorage
Arrive in Anchorage on your own and spend one night in downtown Anchorage. Plan your first evening exploring the largest city in Alaska or just relaxing. Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 2: Anchorage to Whittier to Anchorage
Ride the Glacier Discovery Train and enjoy the show as you journey from Anchorage to Whittier. Prince William Sound has 3,000 miles of shoreline surrounded by the Chugach Mountains to the east, west and north. Fifty-mile long Montague Island and several smaller islands form natural breakwaters between the Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Experience the 26 Glacier Cruise, where you will come face to face with tidewater glaciers plus an amazing array of wildlife in the afternoon, and then re-board the Glacier Discovery Train and return to Anchorage in the evening. Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 3: Anchorage to Denali
Board the Denali Star Train and travel to rugged and breathtaking Denali. With six million acres, Denali National Park & Preserve is larger than Massachusetts. Located in the heart of Alaska’s magnificent and rugged interior, the park is home to majestic Mt. McKinley, North America’s highest mountain. The Park also features glaciers, a sub-arctic ecosystem and an internationally designated biosphere preserve with moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears and wolves. Overnight in Denali.
Day 4: Denali to Fairbanks
Experience more of Denali on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in the morning, and then re-board the Denali Star Train for your trip to Fairbanks in the afternoon. Fairbanks is called "The Golden Heart of Alaska," a reference to the character of her people as much as to the location in Alaska's interior, or to the discovery of gold in 1902. There are several museums in Fairbanks, as well as ample opportunities to be entertained. Stay the night in Fairbanks, the largest city in the Alaskan Interior.
Day 5 - 6: Fairbanks to Anchorage
Embark on the Riverboat Discovery with both morning and afternoon departures. Your three-and-a half hour cruise will take you into the heart of Alaska and the heart of a family who has made the rivers of Alaska a way of life for four generations. You will see a bush plane taking off from a "bush" style runway, visit the home and kennels of four time Iditarod winner Susan Butcher, witness the "wedding of the rivers," and gain insight into the ancient Athabascan Indian culture. Alaskan Native guides who have worked and lived in Alaska will take you on a personalized tour of the Chena Indian Village. Afterward, fly to the Arctic Circle with Northern Alaska Tour Company for breathtaking views of the midnight sky and to learn the story of Alaska’s Arctic. Overnight in Fairbanks. Next day, fly from Fairbanks to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines, where your tour ends.
